I was deploying a new Visual Studio Team Foundation Server in an existing server farm that has SQL 2008 R2 and SharePoint 2010 Servers. One of the software prerequisites of Visual Studio TFS is the SQL Server 2008 Full-Text Search feature.
To save you the trouble of doing the install on your own, here is a server ready with SQL Server Full-Text Search Component.
The Full-Text Search feature lets users and applications run full-text queries against character-based data in SQL Server tables. Installation of this feature is simple and pretty straight forward, but in my case things got a bit complicated. For some reason, the installation process failed.
Wait, what do you mean failed? How is that possible?!
The first thing I did after getting the error message was read the summary log. This time, it was not helpful. The log file said, “SQL Server installation failed. To continue, investigate the reason for failure, correct the problem, uninstall SQL server and then return SQL Server Setup.”
Uninstalling SQL server sounded too drastic! I decided to investigate the problem instead. After hours of troubleshooting, I discovered that the solution was actually quite simple.
The way to resolve this error is to copy the installation files from the DVD/ISO locally to your server and run the installation process again. I really can’t tell you why, but it works.
I tried again and this time the installation of Full-Text Search component completed successfully!
